another one of these. i'm not a figurative drawist by any means but there's a lot to be said for sitting down of an afternoon with a bit of paper and a pencil and drilling some technique  

draw a face

 i'm doing a thing just now where i need a drawing of a face that's broadly anatomically accurate and repeatable. while i've got all the stuff in the house, drawing isn't something i do much more than once a year so i needed a simple method that i could do quickly. this fits the bill. so much so i'm tempted to do more drawing! lol 

*i respect the lad's commitment to a heavier paper but, for practice, i'm going much lighter and cheaper!

barbara walker

 it's like the air i breathe. that was enough for me. but, of course, art is always political, especially if you've been designated a minority. beautiful drawings. i'd love to have a go with the charcoal on a big long stick! 

shading

i don't love a computer it's true but this vid shows how you can have a play with the likes of photoshop and maybe make your drawing process a bit easier. or, just the ball thing is a great exercise. draw that and vary your light source for a bit, then work into more complex shapes 

drawing

 i can see the end of summer now and i can feel myself getting ready to be back making indoors. and, coincidentally, this got thrown up in my feed. i don't draw much these days, at least not representative drawing. and it hadn't occurred to me that when i did my pencil technique was completely different. asemic writing, it turns out, really is still writing! check this out. if you're already doing it it's a nice conformation but if not, loosen up that crampy hand and give yourself more freedom!

i love watching someone really hitting their game. representation, hyperrealism are about as far away from what i do as it's possible to get but i love these pencil images from dylan eakin, not least for their sheer craft. would love to see one of these in the flesh

bam's way tries inktober

 

    

came across this after seeing a video challenge on bill making stuff. i like bam's choice of pencil, clear lines and i covet that light. most of all tho i like him taking on a daft challenge. i'm doing a lot of this lately. in between the being ill i'm just after reaching the varnishing stage of a picture i really don't like. that said, the person who wants it really likes it so what do i know! same thing with bam here - he wasn't super happy with some of the images but finished. and others he liked that he may work up later. the moral of the story - work is work! 


*many moons ago i had a colleague who was being really sniffy about her son's miniature painting. i'm not the best you'll see at this but i did used to do it for money and everything i know about washed i learned from miniatures. so i loved the bit with bill and his light source. if it's not 'art' enough for you , take a look at yourself! lol

of all the images i've seen in the last month these by adolfo arenas alonso are the ones i'm taken with the most. i adore their quirkiness but also, as he's from andalucia where i have close friends from, there's a certain something that speaks to where they're from

i can see why some people might not take to stephen croeser's images. for me though there's times you just need the simplicity of lines and shades, that's not so veru simple at all
