using text and image cam be a tricky business so it's even better to see it done so well in that most neglected of fields - textile. a browse around kate daudy's work is well worth the time and is far from just being about dress based pieces. do tho, check out war dress as another example.

macoto murayama

we were out the other day at a macoto murayama botanical drawing exhibit. we like a botanical drawing in our house and these transcend tradirion and presentation. totally worth checking out.

found poetry

not so much found poetry as poetry being where you find it. i've been a fan of napowrimo in the past but have found over the years that the prompts surrounding this exercise, after a while, become a bit same old same old. at least that is until i came across the found poetry review's list of prompts (tho they should properly be described as exercises) for napowrimo 2016.

these are dazzling. all poets and, more importantly people who wouldn;t describe themselves as poets, should get into these if only to challenge themselves about language can do. following these posts the poetry is, if anything, incidental. i was loving the creativity of approach, the manner in which i found myself challenged.

i haven;t done so yet but one day soon i'm going to have a day where i just work thru these just in order to see what comes out the other side

model making

me, i haven't made a model in decades but, like so many of my generation, opening up he box on a plastic kit was a familiar experience. but here's what happens when someone who's really good at it gets going. what's interesting to me here isn;t the model itself but the techniques that david damek uses to realise the finished object, anyone who's into craft and making will be loving this wee vid

matthew callahan

i was genuinely intrigued by matthew callahan's recreation of war photograph's using star wars figures. ot sounds a bit gimmicky but, given he's serving in the military, it quickly steps up to be a meditation on this public service and how a serving soldier might mediate thru popular culture. there's too few artworks by people in service - it's great to see this.

andrew wyeth

i think i got into andrew wyeth from the time i saw this picture of helga testorf. an odd choice maybe for someone whose first choice may not be so representative but something about the way he paints light keeps me coming back for more

andrea kowch

i'm very taken by the pictures of andrea kowch. something about them make them feel like a magical realist andrew wyeth. not much of a one for social media her website's a bit out of date but an image search yields fruitful results

jane long

 as someone who almost entirely lacks the patience for photoshop i admire those who do so i was really taken with jane long's reworkings of old photographs. i'm a fan of old pics generally but these give anew life and narrative to the image while being respectful to the source. even better she has a tutorial page so you can see how she did it. full credit for that! check out more of her work via the link.

shakespeare - relevant?

most likely ever since i was at school when doubtless it was argued to me i've been on about the relevance of shakespeare to young people. sometimes i get it right and there's a spark, sometimes - not so much. one common theme from the nineties onwards (and included born and the like) was that had shakespeare been alive he would undoubtedly have been something to do with rapping. any discussion i might have had however is blown away by aka from the hip hop shakespeare company in this ted talk. it could be you're an educator, you may be just a parent who wants to share, whatever your background if you've got a feeling for the language of shakespeare this is essential viewing.
