the bicyle thieves

this massive classic. and hard italian practice for me!

you have to wonder what today's equivalent would be. 50 something man gets pinarello stolen when the security system in his bike storage shed fails and he can't make the sunday mates ride because he'd have to ride a lesser bike......

wonderful losers

this time italian! this is an altogether different style of doco, seemingly unanchored in time, place or even character (tho you can find out when, where and who in the comments). i found it strangley hypnotic and compelling. plus, the italian. i don't know any italians at the moment and i'm too curmudgeonly to indulge in online chat so content like this is my only point of contact with the italian language. which is a shame as i'm finding more and more, for no reason other than pure emotion, that italian is far and away my favourite language to practice despite being awful at it and nowhere near where i want to be. when it's italian time i feel immediately brighter and i can't wait until it starts to fall into place and i can read and speak (a bit!)

het moet en het zal

it's going to be cycling doumentaries now, not least because there's a wealth of these now and, handily, quite some number in the traditional cycling languages so good practice! i liked this first one in large part just because of the dutchness (ten dam's parents are fabulous) but also because, in ten dam, there's that sense that he's just trying to get back to that state of cycling he had when he was a wee boy, something most of the latter half of my cycling life is deeply in accord with!

further, and trying desperately to avoid jumping straight on my over marketed/over expensive/useless modern bike soapbox, i really did like the observation that unbound was like a stage of the old school tour de france. except with bikes that, for most of us, aren't fit for purpose! lol

here's another one i haven't watched yet

mohamed mahmoud - stencil work

this made me want to make some texture paste and have a play with stencils, which i've got scheduled for the coming month. even if not, these are just mellow to watch, showcasing artisanal techniques that you just won't come across that often these days. super useful

abstract technique - kunstlerstreich

partly because it's sunny and i can work outside (= make a mess!) i'm really enjoying experimenting with techniques and materials at the moment. that notion of having a bit of a play seems more and more important as i get more and more disinterested in interacting with anyone when it comes to work. so freeing!

so here's petra tholken - her videos aren't embeddable so you'll have to foll ow a link. supereasy, superinteractive (all in german so if you don't speak that you'll need closed captions). she's not the only technique person i watch online but she's the one i keep coming back to
